Teaching with Cultural Competency: Responding to Diversity in Your Classroom

The United States is a melting pot and one thing that makes our country unique is the different experiences, talents, and skills our culture helps us bring to the proverbial table of life. Our students are no different. Understanding where they come from and how their family unit operates can be a great tool in teaching tolerance, empathy, and awareness of diversity. By the end of this training you will:

  1. Identity your own bias towards certain groups of people and how that affects your interactions with them.
  2. Describe 5 actionable steps you can take to be inclusive and support the children and families of all backgrounds in your classroom.
  3. Name 3 common questions children ask about race and/differences and craft a reply.

This training will help you check your own unintentional biases and challenge how you think about your students. You will gain a deeper understanding of just how well YOU are positioned to impact little minds, regardless of what they hear at home. You will be challenged to think about how you teach and the words you use to ensure you are meeting your students and their families in a way that is healthy and inclusive for all. You can impact future generations by how you teach and talk about diversity in your classroom.
